Liturgical Apostolates
Altar Servers
Altar servers are recruited from CCD and Catholic school students upon completion of 4th grade.
This dedicated group of young people takes their service to the parish community very seriously and often continues to serve through their college years.
Adult altar servers, who are senior citizens from the parish, faithfully serve funeral Masses during the week. Their help and vigilance is of great value to the parish.
Lectors
Lectors are men and women from the parish who minister to the community in the celebration of the Mass. They read the Sacred Scriptures, and the Intercessions, during Mass and other liturgical celebrations.
Lectors ought to have a good, strong, speaking voice. Since they are visible in the sanctuary, and represent the parish in their ministry, they ought to dress modestly and their manner of life ought to be in keeping with their sacred duties. Their ministry extends beyond the sanctuary, and necessarily includes personal reflection on the Scriptures, a deep prayer life, and continued practice of their readings before Mass.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion in the official title (not "Special Ministers" or "Eucharistic Ministers") for those who assist with the distribution of Holy Communism, both within Mass, and to the sick and homebound. The Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist is the Bishop, or Priest. The Ordinary Minister of Communion is the Deacon. Lay persons who help with distributing Holy Communion are called Extraordinary Ministers. They are to be employed only in cases of grave necessity.
Since they are visible in the sanctuary, and represent the parish in their ministry, they ought to dress modestly and their manner of life ought to be in keeping with their sacred duties. Their ministry extends beyond the sanctuary, and necessarily includes personal reflection on the mysteries of the Eucharist, a deep prayer life, continual respect for the Eucharist, and the cultivation of Christian values.
Ushers
Ushers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel play an important role and handle several responsibilities.
They...
- Welcome the people to Mass
- Make available the votive candles
- Coordinate family members to carry the gifts at offertory
- Assist in seating people at Mass
- Assist in the Sunday offering
- Assist in directing people in the reception of Holy Communion
- Distribute Church bulletins after Mass
- Assist should someone become ill and have ready access to 911
- Some ushers are trained in the use of the portable defibrillator.
- Receive suggestions from the people
If you would like to become an usher, call John Beene at 330-792-7028 or call the rectory office.
Choir
The choir of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an apostolate dedicated to enhancing the worship of the congregation through the ministry of music. The choir regularly assists the parish by providing music and leading the congregation at the 10am Sunday Mass and at the principal Masses of Feast Days and Holy Days.
Membership is open to all parishioners high school age and over. Rehearsals are usually held one-half hour prior to the Sunday 10am Mass. Rehearsals for special Feast Days, Holy Days or other celebrations are held on an evening that is convenient for the majority of choir members.
